Councils in Tayside have paid out more than £700k in compensation claims since 2012 according to figures just published. The council paying out the most in compensation is Angus who has handed out over £343,000. The local authority pay-outs have been to both members of staff and members of the general public. The claims relate to defective footpaths, theft, damage to property and cars by grass cutting as well as injuries caused in schools and parks.

£16K paid out for defective footpath

In excess of £100k has been awarded following employer liability claims, with one particular case amounting to over £44k following damage caused through the impact of a vehicle or machine. The vast majority of compensation claim costs to Angus Council over the last three years related to incidents involving vehicles. The amount totalled £183,000.  Public claims mostly related to injuries sustained due to faulty council property, with one claim costing £16,000 after an injury was caused by a defective footpath surface.

In Dundee the total cost of payouts came to just over £300,000 in the last three years. Claims made related to people injured at a swimming pool, a fall from council equipment and things like dampness and condensation. A spokeswoman for Dundee Council stated that risk management procedures had resulted in a reduction in claims. She stated: “These efforts include reviewing the Council’ road maintenance policy, carrying out inspections and looking at past claims”. She acknowledged however that it can take up to nine months for a claim to be processed, and therefore the figure could still go up.

Perth and Kinross Council paid out more than £83K — most of which related to faulty road surfaces.
